Abstract

This study investigates how digitalization shapes business model innovation in cultural heritage institutions and its effect on multi-dimensional value creation. Research findings indicate that digitalization could transform the value creation of institutions through platform integration, experience transformation, and ecosystem collaboration. The study further introduces a Dual-Balance model to explain the tensions of institutions during digital transformation. A dynamic balance between these tensions facilitates multi-dimensional value creation and sustainable development. The paper also provides guidance for cultural heritage institutions in developing digital strategies, highlighting the importance of balancing commercial sustainability with public cultural services, while allowing for context-specific transformation paths. Additionally, future research may further validate the usability of the Dual-Balance model and examine the long-term impacts of digital technologies on value creation in the cultural heritage sector.
